HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF GOSHEN INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY (GIA)
The Goshen International Academy (GIA) metamorphosed from what was known as the former Mercyland Academy.
Mercy Land Academy was a school that existed at House 8, Road 142 off 14th Avenue, Gwarinpa,Abuja until 2007, when it was acquired from the original owners, Bishop and Mrs Kawas by Engr and Mrs Dom Onoh in 2007.
The new owners of Mercyland Academy operated the school with the same name and at the same location for about one year from 2007, the new management used the one additional year to learn the ropes about the structure, culture, environment, status of the school(including extent of compliance with key educational and government regulatory bodies) ,the PTA, the facilities in place and the general operating environment.
The use of the name and location afforded a seamless transition in the ownership of the school, subsequently In February 2008, an entirely new school was birthed from the Mercyland Academy with the name Goshen International Academy(GIA), the school was registered as an educational institution with the Corporate Affairs Commission on February 29,2008 with RC No.733816
The new school inherited all the assets and liabilities of the former Mercyland Academy and ramped up activities to consolidate and progress from the initial status of the former school.
Registrations were pursued with the relevant educational and government organizations, tax and other corporate obligations were mainstreamed as part of the corporate policy
The result of the above changes was seen in the steady growth of the school to the point that the facilities and size of the compound became inadequate for the aspirations and plans of management, a new compound was consequently acquired in 2011 and rapidly developed, the school now moved into this facility located at House 112,3rd Avenue,Gwarinpa in 2012.
The new location afforded the school ample space to grow numerically and acquire more capacity as several extra curricular activities were added to the daily activities of training. The numerical growth in pupils naturally drove the growth and expansion in our assets, more buses were acquired, state of the art facilities like brand new 45kva generator, air conditioners were acquired for each classes, more computers , CCTV was put in place to better monitor and police the environment and so on.
One can conveniently say that the GIA grew vertically and horizontally at the 3rd Avenue location,GIA soon after acquired enough experience to transit from a Nursery and Primary school to one that added the College Programme in 2017, initially we started with the Junior Secondary and learnt the ropes and progressed into the Senior Secondary Program. As things continued to progress, we later found out that the 3rd Avenue location was no more sufficient for the space requirements of all our programs, hence in 2019, another facility was acquired solely for the College program in House 49, 4th Avenue, Gwarinpa
The GIA today operates from the two locations, while the Primary and Nursery programs are located in the 3rd Avenue facility, the Secondary program is located in the 4th Avenue location.
In the college ,we have classes up to SS3, we offer subjects in Arts, Business and Science subjects. Our programs have been accredited by the Directorate of Quality Assurance(DQA), for both the Nursery, Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Classes.
We have well equipped laboratories for all science subjects and adequate studios for Arts subjects, in consideration of these achievements and potentials, we have been accredited as a recognized centre for both Junior and Senior Secondary School examinations by the Education Resource Centre(ERC), WAEC and NECO.
We are very excited about our trajectory as a school to this enviable status, it is one borne out of acquired capacity and experience through the years, we grew this capacity ourselves, we are therefore a school that learnt the ropes ourselves and have in-situ experience and capacity
We have matured procedures for monitoring activities and quality control(we have an in-house quality controller, a 35 years of experience teacher and educational regulator), we can boldly pride ourselves as a school of choice in the country and one of the best in the FCT, our slogan, ‘Yes I can’ encapsulates this philosophy.
We continue to look forward with great nostalgia and we are poised to achieving the enviable position of the best in the country. We are indeed what others are trying to be!
